The awkward semantics of Facebook reactions

چکیده
Facebook originally had a single reaction feature, like, which was updated in 2016 with five other options, and again 2020 sixth. The intended meanings of these features remains unclear: they are both constrained expressive range potentially confused one another. This study examines the distribution reactions across seven samples posts to evaluate their potential assess comparability contexts, terms three current approaches interpreting social media meanings: engagement, sentiment, face-work. reactions’ is complex unstable available aggregate data does not reveal face-work patterns otherwise readily observable. In conclusion, cautions offered regarding quantitative analyses features.

Facebook sentiment: Reactions and Emojis
Emojis are used frequently in social media. A widely assumed view is that emojis express the emotional state of the user, which has led to research focusing on the expressiveness of emojis independent from the linguistic context. We argue that emojis and the linguistic texts can modify the meaning of each other. The overall communicated meaning is not a simple sum of the two channels. In order ...
متن کاملBeauty in the Beast A Functional Semantics for the Awkward Squad
It can be very difficult to debug impure code, let alone prove its correctness. To address these problems, we provide a functional specification of three central components of Peyton Jones’s awkward squad: teletype IO, mutable state, and concurrency. By constructing an internal model of such concepts within our programming language, we can test, debug, and reason about programs that perform IO ...
متن کاملPredicting Controversial News Using Facebook Reactions
English. Different events and their reception in different reader communities may give rise to controversy. We propose a distant supervised entropy-based model that uses Facebook reactions as proxies for predicting news controversy. We prove the validity of this approach by running withinand across-source experiments, where different news sources are conceived to approximately correspond to dif...
متن کاملConstructive semantics for instantaneous reactions
This report presents some results towards a game–theoretic account of the constructive semantics of step responses for synchronous languages, providing a coherent semantic framework encompassing both non-deterministic Statecharts (as per Pnueli & Shalev) and deterministic Esterel. In particular, it is shown that Esterel arises from a finiteness condition on strategies whereas Statecharts permit...
متن کاملMobilization Forum: Awkward Movements
Several years ago, Gay Seidman complained in an article in Mobilization that scholars of the South African antiapartheid movement had so ignored the role of armed struggle as to leave the impression that the movement and its most famous leader, Nelson Mandela, were nonviolent in the Gandhian mold. In fact, Mandela was the first military commander of the African National Congress. He owed his po...
